Place of Hope International, Tennessee Homeless Shelter
After opening the center and beginning to provide treatment services for alcoholics and addicts, we became aware of a need to provide temporary shelter for homeless people. Having such a wonderful facility, we felt an obligation to provide a place to stay for those in need. Many churches refer homeless individuals to our facility.
In addition, Maury County Sheriff’s Department, Columbia Police Department, and the Tennessee Highway Patrol refer the homeless people to us. Prior to accepting the homeless, they must be checked through one of these law enforcement agencies to ensure that they are not fugitives. We evaluate why the person is homeless. We determine whether the situation is temporary caused by an unfortunate condition caused by chemical dependency, mental illness, eccentricity, unwillingness to work, or some other reason.
We teach job readiness skills, Biblical principles for successful living, and independent living skills in an effort to enable individuals to get back on their feet.
A recent survey taken in our immediate community of Columbia, Tennessee reported that on any given night, there are approximately 30 people who are sleeping in cars or abandoned houses or buildings.
Place of Hope International, Columbia, Tennessee Soup Kitchen
Place of Hope operates a soup kitchen that focuses on feeding the poor and elderly in the community. We serve a free, hot lunch Monday through Friday during the noon hour in our cafeteria.
Place of Hope International, Tennessee Disabled Housing
Village of Hope is a 15 unit apartment complex that provides affordable permanent rental housing for low income people with disabilities in Maury County.
The housing affords persons with disabilities (physically disabled, mentally disabled and chronically mentally ill) to live independently as possible in the community with access to the supportive services or assistance they may need.
A typical unit consists of 535 square feet of living space with a living room, bedroom and bath.
A facility manager lives on-site and supervision is available 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. Village of Hope is designed as a community service to provide safe and secure affordable housing for those members of the community who are most in need.
Place of Hope International, Tennessee Transitional Housing
In downtown Columbia along Woodland St are seven houses that were acquired over the years to be used for transitional housing. Five of them are standing empty, waiting for the resources to make them livable.
Friday Night Hope
On Friday nights at Place of Hope, staff, clients and volunteers load up the vans and head down to Nashville for Friday Night Outreach. Relationships are developed with the city’s homeless from the corner of 4th and Lafayette where food and clothing is distributed.
Nashville Recovery Church
Many of the people that are served on Friday nights are then picked up on Sunday mornings to attend Nashville Recovery Church, an inner-city outreach church located at 1600 Elm Hill Pike in Nashville. After church participants enjoy a free meal and an opportunity to receive practical help.
Place of Hope International, Recovery Referrals
You may call Place of Hope 24 hours a day to refer an individual needing services. Our ministry staff will conduct a brief screening to determine whether the individual is appropriate for our facility. Admission and continued stay in our homeless shelter is based on bed availability and the individual’s suitabilty within our environment.
